Condensed history of the Castle Club, Rochester
Founded in 1797, the Rochester Book Society established many of the traditions particularly associated with the Castle Club today. The book society met in a public house - the Sir John Falstaff, which was abandoned as considered an 'improper place', and moved to The Star in 1821. 1836 saw the purchase of a set for bat, trap and ball and encouraged the playing of the game. By 1918 the Society was in financial difficulties and made its home in The Castle Club (where there was much commonality of membership). The library, the President's chair and ballot box from the original book society are still important features of the Castle Club today.
The Castle Club was commenced formally in 1865 for the playing of cards and billiards with membership drawn from gentlemen who could not quite make the aristocratic heights of the Country Club (which was to close in 1929, due in part to the desirability of Castle Club membership and its superior premises and facilities. The Castle Club moved to its current home on The Esplanade Rochester in 1908.
